Microneedling Benefits 101

Quite often, at our massage and spa clinic, we must clarify what certain health and beauty procedures mean and do. Understandably, people unfamiliar with the treatments and terms may be a little anxious about how they sound. I mean, “microneedling” does seem like it could be in the same wheelhouse as muscle scraping or dry needling (I highly recommend you do it here at the best Chiropractic office in Houston!), some sort of pointy, sharp, medieval torture device (full disclosure, I love ALL of that); however, fear not! Microneedling is nothing designed to inflict pain, and while it does involve small needles, it’s far from a painful experience -  because we numb the sh*t out of you - xoxo.

The benefits of microneedling are many; all of our clients that have experienced a treatment series are shocked at how well their skin responds. So, let’s go over some microneedling benefits, begin our intro course, and relieve any anxieties or confusion regarding this wonderful skincare procedure!

One quick thing before we begin, I wanted to note that microneedling is different from microblading; we will leave it to our friends at Chic Lash Boutique to tell you all about that.

Microneedling Benefits - Sometimes Your Skin Needs a “Wake-Up”

Our bodies are remarkable, and our ability to adapt and heal is nothing short of amazing! However, as we age, our bodies’ repair processes slow down, we stop making as much collagen, and our hormone levels begin to vary; what’s the result? Our skin starts to feel/look dull, flat, dry, and lacking luster - god, I HATE it when the luster is lacking. I don’t know about you, but that leaves me feeling (honestly) a bit depressed, anxious, and sometimes uninspired. But don’t worry - this is not a total crisis; help is on the way - we don’t have to get bangs, I repeat, we do not have to get bangs! (Unless we are Dakota Johnson, that girl looks bomb in bangs!) However, we can switch up our skincare routine, prevent stagnation, and add new interventions.

What is stagnation? I’m not just talking about old stuff in the back of the pantry; stagnation can come in many forms, including skin care routines. Our skin/dermis develops resistance to our skincare, just like the rest of our body develops resistance to things (I’m currently working on my liver's resistance to tequila…). Over time the dermis rejects the same old routines/products and says, “I’m gonna sleep for a while.” Without a challenge, our skin stops rejuvenating itself, and product absorption/utilization levels decrease; this is where microneedling comes in with the healing strategy of “micro-injuries.”

Micro-injuries refer to tiny, controlled injuries, or in this case, micro skin-punctures/cuts, when using techniques like microneedling; these injuries are deliberately made to stimulate the body's natural healing response and promote collagen production, cellular proliferation, oxygenation, and ultimately, rejuvenation. By giving the skin tiny little punctures, it wakes up our skin cells, giving way to youthful new growth. With microneedling, we can snap our fingers at sleeping skin and have it reawakened, fresh, and renewed - giving a whole new meaning to “beauty sleep.”

Microneedling Benefits - What the Treatment Can Accomplish

Everyone’s skin is different, and to the trained eye, there are many skin conditions that microneedling treatments can aid. Some of the most renowned benefits of microneedling include:

  • Reduction in hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation can happen for many reasons (acne, inflammation, hormonal cycles), but regardless of the catalyst, hyperpigmentation is when the melanin in our skin is overactive and causes skin discoloration. To alleviate the “blotchiness,” microneedling promotes new skin cell growth, smoothing out the stark contrasts between pigmentation levels.

  • Reduction in the appearance of scarring or scar tissue

With the same strategy as treating hyperpigmentation, microneedling can help the appearance of scars on the skin by promoting skin cell growth and breaking up the rigid formation of scar tissue at the cellular level.

  • Improves the skin’s absorption of skincare products

When microneedling treatment happens, small channels are opened up in the skin, and these new channels help the skin absorb skincare products, such as our Le Mieux and Drmtlgy products, more quickly and effectively.

  • Increased collagen and elastin production

Collagen and elastin are foundational proteins our bodies produce to promote skin health. These proteins keep our skin plump, firm, and strong. When we undergo microneedling treatment, it’s a direct message to our bodies to get us glowing, encouraging greater collagen and elastin production.

Best results happen in a series - recommendation is a series of 3-4 appointments. For best results, sun exposure must be limited in the first 48-72 hours after treatment; no direct sun exposure 24/7 SPF is required during the post-treatment recovery time.  Consultation is required prior to a microneedling appointment. -  Elevation Massage and Spa.
